Will Statin Use Prevent Fracture of Type 2 Diabetes Associated with Thiazolidinedione Treatment? A Mini-Review and a Hypothesis
نویسندگان
چکیده
Thiazolidinediones (TZDs) are a multi-effective anti-glycemic drug for type 2 diabetes. Recent clinical trials suggest TZDs are associated with bone loss or fracture in older diabetic women. Diabetic women exhibit more rapid bone loss despite the higher baseline bone mineral density. The higher fracture risk of type 2 diabetes may be associated with neural and vascular complications, or the fragile bone structure. Statins were found to exert protective effects on bone through their anti-oxidative effect on vascular and advanced glycation end product-related disorders. The impact of combination use of statins and TZDs on bone however has never been addressed. Whereas considering the advantages of statins and TZDs in treating type 2 diabetes regarding their cardiovascular protection and glycemic control improvement, we hypothesize that the concomitant use of statins and TZDs might also prevent against bone complications of type 2 diabetes or induced by TZDs, especially for older diabetic women.

C ase-control studies of patients with fractures have found that subjects with diabetes have at least a twofold higher risk of fracture than subjects without diabetes (1), with an increased risk of hip, humerus, and foot fractures in elderly diabetic subjects (2–4). Risk factors that contribute to increased fracture in diabetic subjects include number of falls (5,6), insulin use (7,8), function...
متن کاملLonger Length of Stay Increases 1-year Readmission Rate in Patients Undergoing Hip Fracture Surgery
Background: Proximal femur fractures are prevalent among the elderly and associated with substantial morbidity, mortality, and early readmission. Early readmission is gaining popularity as a measure of quality of hospital care and canlower reimbursement. A better understanding of the patient and treatment characteristics associated with readmissionmay help inform program improvement initiatives....
متن کاملPredictors of Mortality Subsequent to a Fracture in Diabetes Mellitus Patients
BACKGROUND Type-1 and type-2 diabetes mellitus (DM) are associated with an increased fracture risk and possibly an increased risk of death following a fracture. AIM To investigate the association between diabetes-related drugs and mortality following a fracture. METHODS A nested case-control study was conducted. Cases were patients with DM who died following a fracture; controls were DM pat...
متن کاملComparison of Elevated Liver Enzymes in Type 2 Diabetic Patients in User and Non-User of Statin
Background: Type-2 diabetes is a risk factor for progressive non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and the majority of diabetic patients have blood lipid disorders, so they take statin drugs. Statins have the adverse effects such as liver dysfunction and increase in liver enzymes. The purpose of this study was to compare the liver enzymes in type 2 diabetic patients who are user and non-user of sta...
متن کاملThe Peep of Nanotechnology in Reproductive Medicine: A Mini-review
Nanotechnology has opened a new field in medicine as well as in other sciences. The aim of this study was to seek the capability of nanotechnology for the treatment of various reproductive diseases. In this study, we analyzed all articles about “nanotechnology and reproductive medicine” published in 2000-2015, indexed in Google Scholar, PubMed and Science Direct. This study indicated that nanot...
